The Graphic Design Technology Department educates the student in the art of visual communication, emphasizing the professional practice of design. Students combine digital technology with aesthetics in the production of typography, signage, publications, identity systems, packaging, design, and other forms of communication including design for electronic distribution. The Graphic Designer combines concepts and facts from the humanities, social sciences and technology while utilizing critical design methodologies in visual problem solving. Upon successful completion of this program, an Associate of Applied Science is awarded. No major may advance to a higher course in his or her area of studio emphasis (Graphic Design) without earning a grade of “C” or higher in the lower division courses. Periodic portfolio reviews determine placement and progression in the program.

Special admissions requirements: Students who wish to enter the Graphic Design Technology program must:

1. Complete an Application for Admissions to the college. 

2. Complete an Application to the Graphic Design Technology program. 

3. Have a high school diploma or GED/HISET equivalency on file with the admissions office 

4. Must have an ACT sub-score of 17 or higher in English or have successfully completed English Composition I or earn a score of 5 on the English Accuplacer test. 

5. Have official ACT scores on file with the admissions office 

6. Confirm with the admissions office that high school transcript or GED/HISET transcript and all previous college course transcripts have been received in the admissions office 

7. Pay any outstanding balances to Northwest MS Community College or any other college 

8. Entrance into the program is on a competitive basis.  

9. The Graphic Design program does recommend, but it is not required, to have a laptop capable of running Adobe Creative Cloud software. Mac computers are available for use by the student during lab hours. The computer can be PC or Mac platform. Additional cost are nominal to include; sketchbook, xacto knife, ruler an small consumables.
